Abstract
This article analyzes the historical evolution of the self-advocacy movement for persons with disabilities, both
globally and in the specific context of the Republic of Moldova. It explores major events that have influenced the development of the international self-advocacy movement and highlights significant stages of this movement in Moldova, as well as the progress and challenges encountered. The article identifies opportunities for future local initiatives,
emphasizing alignment with international standards and the need for active involvement of persons with disabilities
in decision-making processes. Thus, the self-advocacy movement in Moldova is in the early stages of development,
inspired by global trends in the field. To facilitate the sustainable development of this movement, adequate resources,
continuous training for involved actors, strategic collaborations with national and international non-governmental
organizations, and initiatives to raise awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities are necessary. Multiple research methods were employed in the preparation of the article: document analysis, participatory observation, focus
group discussions, and in-depth interviews.
