MEANS OF EQUIVALENCE OF PAREMIOLOGICAL UTTERANCES IN FRENCH COMEDIES SUBTITLED IN ROMANIAN This article represents a study of proverbs in audiovisual translation. Proverbs play an important role in comedy movies in the process of communication between the characters. Even if French and Romanian have related characteristics that display a universal dimension (defined by linguists as universal phrasemes), the translation of paroemia remains a complex problem. The difficulties imposed by paroemia target the transfer of meaning and the expressive valences. The subtitle aims at helping the viewer to overcome the linguistic and cultural barriers. Therefore, the greatest difficulty is not posed by the words and the word combinations that do not have an appropriate equivalent, it rather regards the realities they refer to. The goal of audiovisual translation is to establish an equivalence between the source-language text and the target-language text (both should mean the same thing), having regard to a certain number of constraints. The process is complete if the purposefulness of the target-text coincides with that of the source-text, in other words, if the former has the same communicative function in an equivalent cultural context. Hence, this study will reveal the means of translation which is valid for identifying paremiological equivalents and which resides in applying different translation techniques, considering the formal, semantic, stylistic and functional peculiarities of the paremiological universe. The study is illustrated by different examples excerpted from French comedy movies subtitled in Romanian.
