DEICTIC SHIFT IN TEXTS WITH VARIABLE FOCALIZATION

Abstract
The present article combines the results of narratological and cognitive studies on focalization, viewpoint and on deictic shift in order to develop a model of narrative perspective analysis that would contribute to text understanding and interpretation. The deictic centre, a linguistic construct applied to the analysis of narrative perspective, based on three major elements of text composition – perceptual-cognitive dimension, spatial dimension, and temporal dimension –is analyzed within variable focalization. Since the actualization of this type of perspective is based on more focalizers/deictic centers at the level of action, the study aims at identifying the linguistic markers signaling the deictic shift and the types of relations that exist among multiple deictic centers as a result of these shifts. Keywords: deictic centre, intradiegetic level, deictic centre shift, narrative perspective, variable focalization, deictic centre coordinates, focalization facets.
