Abstract

This article is tackling the utterance as fundamental element in a discourse, in order to familiarize the receptor with the content of what is expressed in many circumstances. The views of linguists are presented in regard to sentences classification according to their meaning and aim of communication, which, yet, differ from author to author. The relation between the utterance and its content is reasoned with examples collected from four novels by Calinescu. Lexical and grammatical, semantic and functional peculiarities of different types of utterances are also highlighted. It is about verb moods and tenses, specific lexical elements, topical elements, intonation, repetitions etc. Keywords: utterance, communication, interlocutor, speaker, ellipses, syntactic structure, meaning and goal of communication, effective communication utterances/ non affective, direct total, partial interrogative sentences, indirect interrogative sentences.
