Abstract

The article examines the particular situation of foreign subjects of Jewish confession in Bessarabia, as compared to foreign subjects from other confessions. It is ascertained that during the period 1807-1860 in the Russian Empire there was a restrictive system regarding the admission of foreign subjects to the domestic commercial relations, meant to protect the Russian entrepreneurs from competition. As for the foreign subjects of Jewish confession, the legal measures adopted with the aim of thwarting the massive establishment of the Jews from the former Polish territories within the empire were also in effect. Keywords: trade, merchants, foreign subjects, Jews, Russian Empire, Bessarabia, Jewish settlement area.
