Abstract
In the French literature of the second half of the nineteenth century, we are witnessing a pleiad of unprecedented human types, that offers us a vast palette of moral values and anti-values, and sometimes even of both under the guise of the same character. In contemporary society, arrivisme takes various forms, some of them being different from those of the nineteenth century. We meet arrivistes in any social sphere or hierarchical structure, whatever the socio-economic ideology applied. Philosophers, sociologists and other experts of the modern world declare that one of the causes of arrivisme in contemporary society is the excess of competition. Keywords: realism, value, anti-value, morality, arrivisme, social ascension, hierarchy, competition, careerism.
