In the context of diplomatic language, euphemisms play an important role in international and intercultural communication. The use of polite and courteous language is crucial in maintaining amiable diplomatic relations between two or more countries. Euphemisms are words or expressions used instead of terms considered to be offensive, insulting or too harsh in a certain context. Although their use may seem a way of being polite or avoiding confrontation, they are triggered by different factors and influence human communication. The main triggers of euphemisms are considered to be political correctness, politeness, cultural taboos and dysphemisms. This article thoroughly explores the way in which the triads euphemism – political correctness – politeness (pragmatic perspective) and euphemism – taboo – dysphemism (semantic perspective) influence the use of euphemisms in the diplomatic context and the way they can help maintain positive diplomatic relations.
