THE ETIOLOGY OF PERFECTIONISM. A THEORETICAL ANALYSIS The present article lays out a theoretical analysis of the factors involved in the etiology of perfectionism, and namely: parental factors, environmental factors, personality and cognitive factors. Parental factors, which include love and conditional acceptance, criticism and exaggerated expectations, appear to be the most important etiological factors of perfectionism. Conditional acceptance, high standards and criticism can also be included as environmental factors, along with the direct and the indirect aggression. Among the personality factors neuroticism and scrupulousness have been singled out, whereas the cognitive schemas appear as mediators between parental behaviors and perfectionism. Keywords: perfectionism, criticism, exaggerated expectations, conditional acceptance, psychological control, indirect aggression, neuroticism, cognitive schemas.
