FROM THE HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF METHODS OF TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

This article provides a brief review of the history of methods of Foreign Language Teaching (FLT). The
comparative analysis of the FLT methods has been carried out, the advantages and disadvantages of popular methods are discussed. The following methods of FLT are presented: the grammar-translation, the textual-translation, the direct method, audiolingual method, audiovisual method, the comparative method, old humanistic methods, communicative language teaching. Today we have a variety of methods of FLT at our disposal and we can choose methods according to the needs of our modern society. When the method becomes unfashionable, some of its techniques or ideas are often borrowed by another new method. This work is an attempt to identify the most effective and popular FLT method of the present time.
