Abstract

EFFECTS OF HYPERINFLATION ON THE WELFARE OF EUROPEAN CITIZENS IN THE 20th CENTURY Hyperinflation is a phenomenon that manifests itself in the exaggerated rise in prices due to the devaluation of a currency. This usually occurs as a result of wars or strong economic, social or political recessions. The article examines the most “spectacular” hyperinflation in the European countries and how it has been reflected in the lives of citizens. The evolutionary hyperinflationary crises are also analysed, as well as the triggering causes and the consequences on the economies of the states. The methods of combating this phenomenon used by different European states in the 20th century are also examined. Keywords: hyperinflation, monthly inflation, denomination, paper currency with the highest nominal.
