Abstract
The present study examines the isoenzymatic activity dynamics of amylases (α- and β-amylase) in maize (Zea mays) seeds during germination (0–120 h). We quantified changes in soluble protein content, measured both total and specific enzymatic activity for the two amylase types, and conducted electrophoretic separations to reveal the isoenzyme profiles. The results indicate that α-amylase activity increases gradually, reaching a functional peak around 72 h, while β-amylase becomes more dominant toward the later stages of germination. Electrophoretic profiles revealed multiple enzyme bands (isoenzymes) for both types of amylase. These findings support that starch reserve mobilization is finely regulated at the enzymatic level, adapting to the metabolic demands of the developing seedling.
