Abstract

Meiosis is a fundamental biological process for sexual reproduction in eukaryotes. In this paper, we review the pro-gress made in recent years for isolating meiotic genes at different plant species. Understanding how this process is regu-lated might help plant breeders to create new allele combinations that could produce superior hybrids. The knowledge of meiotic processes in plants, which at date are not completely understood, in future, will have important implications for the exploitation of apomixis and sexual polyploidization.

Keywords: meiosis, genetic control, recombination, crossing-over, Arabidopsis thaliana, meiotic mutants, gene expression.
