Abstract

The review of research results in recent decades connected to cyanobacteria as the sources of bioactive secondary metabolites. The main classes of secondary metabolites produced by cyanobacteria with toxicity to humans and animals are presented. Some cyanobacteria strains producing microcystins, nodularins, saxitoxins, cylindrospermopsins, lyngby-atoxins and lipopolysaccharides are evaluated and some factors that influence on the secondary metabolites production and prospective of its application in pharmaceutical or agriculture are described.
