Abstract

In this study, the genetic diversity within different populations of Origanum vulgare – an important aromatic plant, widely used in food and pharmaceutical industry, has been carried out using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. The studied genotypes are characterized by a high genetic variability, tested primers generating a total of 153 RAPD fragments of which 68% were polymorphic. To conclude, RAPD analysis can be used to gain rapid information about genetic similarities or dissimilarities within different genotypes. Keywords: genetic polymorphism, Origanum vulgare, RAPD-PCR technique
