Abstract

The blue- green alga Nostoc flagelliforme is a terrestrial specie, that meets more frequently in arid and semi-arid areas of the Earth. The importance attached of research for Nostoc flagelliforme is justified by morpho-physiological properties and rich content of biologically active substances that can be used in various fields. From the biochemical components of the alga of great importance are carbohydrates that serve as a source for production of pharmaceutical preparations which are based on high contents of polysaccharide. Due to easy digestibility of alga, Nostoc flagelliforme is widely used for human consumption both as a delicacy and as a supplement of biologically active substances. These researches highlight the Nostoc flagelliforme through the characteristic of biologically active substances, evidence of habitat and aspects of utilization the algal biomass in different areas.

Keywords: Nostoc flagelliforme, biological active substances, biomass, cultivation, utilization.
