Abstract

EDL CARACTERISTICS AT THE EDGE OF MONTMORILLONITE

The characteristics of an electrical double layer at the edge of montmorillonite were established applying electrostatic and chemical models also by differentiation of the free energy of an electrical double layer into electrical contribution and chemical contribution. Parameters established for the surface ªS−OH2 + and ªS−OH centers at the edge of H-montmorillonite were K+ = 10-2,3, K- = 10-5,1, ΔpK = -2,8 and pHPZS 3,7. In terms of surface complexation model these constants constitute logK+(int) = 3,03 and logK-(int) = -5,83. Keywords: montmorillonite, basal and edge surfaces, electrical double layer.
