THE GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND CULTIVATION OF PRINSEPIA UNIFLORA BATALIN AT THE “ALEXANDRU CIUBOTARU” NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN (INSTITUTE)

The bioecological peculiarities of growth, development and cultivation of Prinsepia uniflora Batalin plants are described in this article. This shrub can be propagated by generative and vegetative methods, namely, by lignified cuttings and by layering. Early autumn fresh seeds sowing at a depth of 2-3 cm was the optimal and most cost-effective method of propagation. The germination capacity of the seeds sown in autumn varied in the research years, from 60 to 65% and of those incorporated in spring after stratification was only 40-45%, depending on the climatic conditions, following the cultivation techniques throughout the growing season. The plants are valued for their decorative qualities, in early spring – for the abundant, white flowers, and in early autumn – for the hanging branches full of black-purple fruits.
