The anatomo-topographic study of the coxofemoral joint in dogs is of major importance for veterinarians, dog
breeders and biologists, targeting the anatomical structures of support and movement. The hip joint, is supported
by the coxofemoral muscles, allows flexion-extension, but is vulnerable to morphologic changes, influencing the
health of the dog, including in coxofemoral dysplasia or post-dislocation degenerative diseases. In the study, 18
cadavers were analyzed (36 pelvic limbs) by dissection on fresh/formolized material. Upon analyzing the ligamentous structures of the coxo-femoral joint, we observed that the ligamentum capitis ossis femoris is not limited
to exclusive adherence to the Fossa acetabuli. It also adheres to the ligamentum transversum acetabuli which is
supplemented by a “strong accessory ligament”. This additional ligament extends in a caudal direction, attaching
to the acetabular crest through the incision and continuing extracapsularly on the cranioventral surface of the body
of the ischium.
