The review of research results in recent decades on the role of cyanophyte algae, primarily nitrogen fixing algae, as biofertilizers and soil improvers and their influence on crop plants are presented. Some methods for obtaining algal inoculum of nitrogen fixing cyanophyte algae are evaluated and some technologies of their immobilization are discussed. Biofertilizers are the important components of integrated management of nutrients, being economically profitable and environmentally friendly, serving as a source of biologically active substances and sources of food. Cyanophyte algae are one of the renewable sources to supplement or substitute chemical fertilizers and biocontrol agents in sustainable agricultural systems. The potential biological fertilizer can play a key role in the productivity of crop plants, as well as protecting of the environment, being ecological and cost-efficiently for farmers.
