Study the quantity of heterocysts allows discerning the biological nitrogen fixation process by blue-green algae. The volume and number of heterocysts depend on the quantity of fixed molecular nitrogen, the algae species and the composition of nutritive medium. At the cultivation in Drew medium the volume of heterocysts varies between 60.81 and 81.94 μ3, while in the Fogg – 58,96-86.59 μ3 but in the Gusev – 54,68-88.98 μ3. Number of heterocysts supports the oscillations during on the period of growing, being minimum at the beginning and highest toward the end. The maximum frequency of heterocysts was detected of cultivation in Drew medium (11.7%), followed by 10.97% in the Fogg and 9.80% in the Gusev.
