TENSE, TRANSLATION AND RELEVANCE

Abstract
The main purpose is to present an overview of the main assumptions of Relevance theory, a framework proposed by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson, in respect of translation challenges when dealing with temporal information in Romanian and French. Our interest in exploring this field is justified by the large variety of temporal equivalences in translation exercises with Romanian as a target language, the frequency of solecisms and mismatching between two mostly parallel systems. The criterion of consistency with the principle of relevance provides in our opinion a promising methodological and explicative approach compatible with a broader traductological research nature. Keywords: criterion of consistency with the principle of relevance, context, inference, Relevance theory, temporal value, translation unit.
