In an increasingly diverse society, both culturally and in terms of identity, the furry subculture has become a
relevant topic for understanding new forms of personal expression, social belonging, and psychological impact. It
reflects individuals’ need to explore alternative identities in a safe and accepting environment. The furry subculture
brings together people passionate about anthropomorphic characters, manifesting through art, identity roles (fursonas), and specific social interactions. External perceptions of the phenomenon vary, with both curiosity and negative
stereotypes influencing how furries perceive themselves and are treated socially. Studies show that this community
functions as a protective factor for marginalized individuals, fostering authentic connections. This article examines
the psychosocial particularities of the furry subculture, highlighting its impact on identity, social relationships, and
the mental well-being of its members.
Keywords: subculture, furry, fursonas, stereotypes, identity, mental health, anthropomorphism, zoomorphism.
